Gittel is a Chassidic Jew living in the closed community of Borough Park, Brooklyn. The rules of Chassidic life are very clear. They have been set by an ancient script written thousands of years before and every detail follows the rules exceopt for abuse. Abuse has never been a part of the rules. At age thirteen, Gittel learns of the abuse her best friend has suffered at the hands of a member of her family. The adults in her community, including her parents, try to persuade Gittel, and themselves, that nothing happened. Forced to remain silent, Gittel begins to question everything she was raised to believe. This is a very strong story of a strongly knit community and its reaction to child abuse. F CHAYIL
